HPSV lamps are popularly used in industrial and manufacturing facilities. These lamps contain Mercury apart from the other elements like Xenon and Sodium. HPSV lamps have great efficiency when it comes to visible light emitted by the lamp per watt of electricity consumed. High intensity discharge lights like High Pressure Sodium lights are slow to start or in other words do not start instantly. These lamps need some time to warm up and emit light. Ignitors play a major role in starting the High Pressure Sodium lamps and Metal Halide lamps. HPSV lamps have a small diameter tube and do not have the required space to house a starter electrode. A very high voltage is required to start an arc in the lamp. Ballast which includes an ignitor is used to deliver the high voltage required by the lamp.
For starting the lamp a high voltage energy pulse is initiated and sent by the ignitor through the arc tube of the lamp striking an arc. Due to this pulse, an arc is initiated through the xenon gas present in the tube. The lamp turns bluish in color after initial lighting of xenon and mercury, just after that. Finally, sodium present in the lamp is vaporized due to which it emits white light. Pulse emitted by the ignitors can be repeated with a difference of microseconds and then drop out of the circuit when the lamp is fully started. Ignitors for commonly available lamps are selected on the basis of mains voltage and wattage. So basically ignitor acts as a starting device for these HPSV lamps.
